CHAPTER TWELVE

In the last of the daylight, Ellen sat at the window of their room, happily sewing them headwear for the next day. She had already attached strips of fabric to the eyelets she’d had the leatherworker put into the two corners of the half-moon shaped piece of calf’s leather.

When she finished the small additions, she’d shown him how she planned to cover her head with her stola, and keep it in place with the leather bonnet. It looked odd, but he could see how it would protect her face, shoulders and arms.

Now she was finishing up the ‘cap’ for him. This was a little more complicated. She had covered with fabric a sickle-moon shaped piece of leather, which she called the visor, and was now in the process of stitching the covered fabric to a band of leather already fashioned to fit his head. Such an adornment was common amongst non-roman warriors, keeping sweat and hair from their eyes, so it had not surprised the leatherworker when she requested it.

Ellen had also covered the headband with cloth and was just finishing up stitching it to the fabric-covered sickle-moon. After biting off the thread with her teeth, she thrust her handiwork toward him proudly. Her lovely brown eyes twinkled with excitement. He’d wear a dog on his head if it meant she’d look at him like that more often.

He took the ‘cap’ and placed it on his head. It felt uncomfortable. Tutting, Ellen stood up and reached for the cap, straightening out the protruding leather so that the headband sat comfortably across his forehead.

She was so close he could see the fine blonde hairs on her cheeks. He could smell her womanly scent. And the sight of those berry lips puckered in concentration was his undoing.

He dropped his head to claim her lips, but the cap’s visor hit her forehead before he reached his goal.

‘Ouch!’ she cried, stepping back and rubbing her forehead vigorously.

He threw off the offending item and stepped in to take over the rubbing. There was a red mark already forming across her sunburned forehead. It would have hurt twice as much because of that sensitised, red skin.

Changing his mind, he went for the jar of balm he’d purchased for her. While she stood watching him with wide eyes, he gently applied the balm to the whole of her forehead.

‘Better?’ he said on an outbreath, too aware of her closeness to say more.

‘Yes.’ She bit her plump bottom lip. It was all she had to do to tempt him back to claim that lip. He leaned in again, careful to avoid her forehead and took that lip between his, to suckle. The ohh that came from her was enough to tell him she liked what he did.

Drawing her gently into his arms, feeling the rightness of having her there, he kissed her properly, deeply and hungrily. This was what he’d craved all day and all the sleepless night before. He’d made a mistake by kissing her last night and now he suffered for it.
